Have you ever thought about what the world will be without the hydrocarbon resin? I'm afraid that the connection between many items will not be so close. It's not a joke since the hydrocarbon resin plays an important role in producing adhesives. The most important reason for the wide use of hydrocarbon resin in adhesives is that they can help to improve their stickiness.
The most common types of the adhesives are the hot melt adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives. The former is mainly used in packing industries while the latter one contributes to the tight connection between huge objects. Both of them consist of hydrocarbon resins and other materials.
The hot melt adhesives are suitable to work at the temperature which is in the range of 250°and 450°F. The adhesives are sprayed at the surface of the target item at such temperature with coating techniques. And the other surface which need to be bonded with the item will be brought to connect with the hot surface. When the surfaces get cool, the connection between them will be so tight that they are difficult be to separated.
The raw materials of pressure sensitive adhesives and hot melt adhesives are similar with each other. Both of them contain hydrocarbon resin and polymers. And in order to improve the aggressive tack and soften the adhesives, sometimes we add plasticizer to the pressure sensitive adhesives. Due to the use of hydrocarbon resin, this type of adhesives attains better physical properties and tackifying features.
